Snapshot of Harmony Day poster

Harmony Day is an Australian Government initiative which takes place every year on March 21, designed to celebrate the country's diversity and promote harmony and respect between different cultures.

Raymond Roca Creativity was called on to design two posters for Sydney Boys High School's Welfare Department in order to raise awareness about Harmony Day 2004. The two poster variants (view posters), copies of which were placed around the school before and during Harmony Day, transmit the core values of the initiative through words, while also visually representing diversity and growth.

The first variant is centred around the symbol of the tree, which is constructed out of circles of varying sizes and strokes, and rendered in the colours of the visual spectrum. The word Harmony Day is also writtten in 30 languages, a reference to cultural diversity, particularly in the context of Sydney Boys High School, where more than 80% of students are from non-English-speaking backgrounds. The second variant represents Harmony Day through the metaphor of flowers, a symbol of growth and festivity, while also utilising the motif of multiple colours in order to signify diversity.
